Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Maintenance Technician is responsible for the upkeep, repair, and general maintenance of The Phelps School’s campus, including academic buildings, dormitories, residential housing, and grounds. This role supports the daily operations of a private day and boarding school by ensuring that all facilities are safe, clean, and fully functional.
The position requires a proactive, team-oriented individual who can manage a wide range of maintenance tasks and respond effectively to the needs of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform general maintenance and repair of campus buildings, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems
Maintain cleanliness and order of facilities, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and floor care (buffing, stripping, waxing)
Prepare, clean and maintain dormitories, classrooms, and common spaces, including moving furniture and equipment as needed
Set up and break down spaces for meetings, events, and school functions
Maintain campus grounds, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and general landscaping
Operate and maintain equipment such as mowers, tractors, snow removal equipment, and other machinery
Perform snow and ice removal from walkways, roads, and parking areas
Complete minor construction and repair work, including painting, patching, and basic masonry
Maintain and repair sidewalks, parking areas, and exterior structures
Remove trash and manage waste disposal across campus
Assist with delivery, unloading, and storage of supplies and materials
Support other departments with moving, setup, and general operational needs
Follow established procedures and schedules for routine and preventive maintenance
Participate in on-call, evening, weekend and emergency coverage as required
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Relevant maintenance or facilities experience preferred
Basic knowledge of building systems, tools, and equipment
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work
Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively as part of a team

Occasional exposure to noise, heat, cold, and other environmental conditions associated with facilities work
