Grand Valley Power, headquartered in Grand Junction, Colorado, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of apprentice lineman. Grand Junction is located on the Western Slope of Colorado with easy access to hunting, fishing, skiing, mountain biking and many other outdoor activities. Grand Junction offers the convenience of a small town atmosphere with all the amenities of a larger city.

SUMMARY:
Works under the direct supervision of a Working Foreman or Lineman. Performs various duties under the guidance of a qualified person, including the construction, maintenance, and repair of distribution and transmission lines and related facilities, as well as service work and other related and assigned duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
Within the limits of board policy, company tariffs, budgets, and legal requirements, assumes responsibility delegated by Working Foreman and Journeyman Lineman, which are not intended to be all-inclusive as other duties may be assigned: If additional duties are assigned, the employee shall have knowledge of the area or be provided with training for the new duty. All duties are performed with a qualified person present or when the Apprentice has become qualified in the area.
Practice and promote daily safe work habits, adhering to the Cooperative Safety Manual.
Frequently constructs underground and overhead electrical lines, including but not limited to digging pole and anchor holes, framing poles, setting poles and anchors, stringing, sagging, and connecting conductors, installing pad-mounted gear and underground conductors, and performing related tasks for new construction on energized and de-energized lines.
Frequently performs various customer service duties, including metering, making service changes, troubleshooting outages, disconnecting and reconnecting services, voltage testing, and locating underground lines. These duties are defined in Grand Valley Power’s Apprenticeship step advancement guidelines.
Frequently maintains both underground and overhead electrical systems by replacing damaged transformers, protective devices, regulators, conductors, insulators, metering installations, poles, switching gear, and related equipment on energized and de-energized lines. These duties are outlined in GVP’s Apprenticeship step advancement guidelines.
Performs related duties in line construction, including managing materials used, stocking trucks, loading and unloading supplies, and inspecting distribution and transmission lines for necessary maintenance.
Recommends actions to improve construction and maintenance practices, equipment performance, and product quality.
Proposes adjustments to working conditions and equipment to boost efficiency.
Submits all necessary paperwork to meet company policies, apprenticeship program, and government regulations.
Ability to perform on-call and/or callout duties beginning in the advanced steps of the apprenticeship. Assignments made at the discretion of the Operations Superintendent.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must submit to random drug and alcohol test as required by DOT.
Occasionally, it is necessary to perform, understand, and be proficient in the Operator’s duties.

The employee is occasionally required to sit and smell.
The employee must lift and/or move 50-75 pounds daily. Occasionally, they may need to lift and/or move 75-100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment features described here reflect what an employee experiences while carrying out the essential duties of this job.
While performing their duties, the employee regularly works at heights that are high and unstable, outdoors in various weather conditions, and is regularly exposed to risks of electrical shock. The employee often works near moving mechanical parts and frequently encounters vibrations. Additionally, the employee occasionally works in environments with fumes or airborne particles and toxic or corrosive chemicals. The employee also frequently works on uneven and rugged terrain.
The noise level in the workplace can sometimes be loud.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To succeed in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed.
Class A Commercial Driver's License with the appropriate endorsements preferred. (At a minimum, must have a CDL Instruction Permit before employment - Maximum of 90 days to obtain a CDL License after starting work)
Valid First Aid and CPR card.
RESPONSE AREA REQUIREMENTS:
On-call employees must live within a reasonable distance to respond quickly to the business office, generally described as from Whitewater, CO to Mack, CO in the Valley floor.
LANGUAGE SKIILS:
Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, staking sheets, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
MATHEMATICAL SKIILS:
Must meet Grand Valley Power/Northwest Lineman Standards of Apprenticeship math requirements.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to use common sense to follow instructions given in written, spoken, or visual form.
Ability to manage problems with multiple variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must be able to read and understand the text and workbooks to complete the Apprentice Program.
Must acquire a working knowledge of RUS construction specifications and the National Electrical Safety Code.
Must be able to understand and follow all OSHA and company safety regulations and rules necessary to perform the job.
Must have the ability and skill to climb poles and towers. Must maintain and demonstrate proficiency annually in climbing and performing pole-top safety rescues.
